๐Ÿ“‘ In this guide: What is a .fcpxmld bundle? How to export from Final Cut Pro How to convert .fcpxmld to SRT/VTT Troubleshooting tips

What is a .fcpxmld bundle?

A .fcpxmld file is actually a macOS package (folder disguised as a file) that contains your entire Final Cut Pro project. When you export subtitles from FCPX as FCPXML, you typically get:

The .fcpxmld extension tells macOS to treat the folder as a single file when you compress it or share it.

How to export .fcpxmld from Final Cut Pro

  1. In Final Cut Pro, open your project
  2. Go to File โ†’ Export XML
  3. Choose FCPXML v1.10 or later (we recommend v1.14)
  4. Save the file with a .fcpxml extension
  5. Right-click the saved file in Finder โ†’ "Compress"
  6. You'll get a .zip file. Rename the extension from .zip to .fcpxmld
  7. Now you can share this bundle โ€” recipients can drop it into our converter

How to convert .fcpxmld to other formats

Our free FCPXML Converter handles .fcpxmld bundles natively:

  1. Drag the .fcpxmld file into the upload zone (or click to browse)
  2. The browser automatically extracts Info.fcpxml from inside the bundle
  3. Your subtitles are parsed and displayed in an editable table
  4. Choose your output format: SRT, VTT, FCPXML, TTML, SCC, ASS, etc.
  5. Click Download โ€” the file saves without uploading anything to a server

Tip: If you only have the Info.fcpxml (not the full bundle), you can drag that single file directly โ€” the converter accepts both.

Troubleshooting

โŒ "Could not find Info.fcpxml"

Make sure you compressed the entire folder, not just Info.fcpxml. The bundle structure should be:

MyProject.fcpxmld/
  โ”œโ”€โ”€ Info.fcpxml
  โ””โ”€โ”€ Resources/

โŒ Subtitles are empty after conversion

Check that your Final Cut Pro project actually has subtitle tracks. In FCPX: Edit โ†’ Captions โ†’ Add Captions to create subtitles first.

โŒ Timecodes are wrong (all 00:00:00.000)

This usually means the FrameRate is misparsed. Try exporting FCPXML v1.10 instead of v1.14, or use our converter which handles both versions correctly.
