What shipped in 12.3 (June 2026)

Final Cut Pro 12.3 dropped on June 30, 2026. It's not a flashy release โ€” no new paradigm, no AI that writes your script โ€” but it adds real workflow improvements that will save editors hours per project. The big three: Magnetic Mask, AI-enhanced auto color, and a redesigned timeline inspector.

More importantly, 12.3 is the last release that supports macOS Sonoma. If you're still on macOS 14, this is your last easy upgrade. macOS Tahoe users got these features earlier in 12.2.

Magnetic Mask

Magnetic Mask is the headliner. It's an AI-powered rotoscope that tracks a subject's outline across frames. Pre-12.3, you needed a separate tool (After Effects, Mocha Pro, DaVinci Resolve Fusion) to do this. Now it's a single click in FCP.

How it works

  1. Select a clip in the timeline.
  2. Go to Effects โ†’ Masks โ†’ Magnetic Mask.
  3. Drag the effect onto the clip.
  4. FCP analyzes the clip (1-2 seconds per second of footage) and generates a mask that follows the most prominent subject.
  5. Refine by drawing rough strokes on areas to add or exclude. The AI adjusts the mask to match.

What it's good for

What it's not good for

Magnetic Mask vs Auto Mask

If you used FCP 11's Auto Mask, you might wonder which to use in 12.3:

Magnetic Mask uses the Apple Silicon Neural Engine and requires an M1 or later Mac. Auto Mask works on any Mac but is less accurate.

AI-Enhanced Auto Color

Auto Color got smarter. The original Auto Color (12.0) was a quick color correction that often oversaturated or crushed shadows. 12.3's version uses the Neural Engine to analyze scene content:

When to use it

Auto Color is a starting point, not a final grade. Use it on first-pass review to get a balanced look, then refine manually. For documentary work, it's good enough to ship without further color grading.

For commercial work (ads, music videos, fashion), bypass Auto Color and grade manually โ€” the AI doesn't understand creative intent.

Redesigned Timeline Inspector

The inspector panel (right side, where you set clip properties) got reorganized. The biggest change: keyword shortcuts now appear inline next to each property, not hidden behind a keyboard shortcut.

Other improvements:

Workflow improvements

Background rendering

FCP 12.3 now renders in the background when you're not actively editing. If you switch to email for 10 minutes, FCP will render 10 minutes of timeline on return. This used to happen manually; now it's automatic when you stop interacting.

Faster import from iPhone

Importing iPhone 15 Pro / 16 Pro footage (ProRes Log) is 30% faster. The metadata parsing is now parallelized across cores.

Project search

The Projects browser now has a real search box. Before 12.3, you scrolled through thumbnails. Now you can type "wedding" and find all projects matching that keyword in the title.

Stabilization improvements

The built-in stabilizer (Effects โ†’ Stabilization) handles shaky handheld footage better. It still can't match After Effects' warp stabilizer, but for moderate shake it's noticeably smoother than 12.0.

Audio ducking

Auto-ducking (lowering background music when dialogue plays) now respects multiple dialogue tracks. If you have two mics (host + guest), FCP lowers music when either talks.

What didn't change

FCP 12.3 is a polish release. The fundamentals โ€” magnetic timeline, library structure, optimized media โ€” are identical. If you're on 12.0 or later and happy with your workflow, you don't need to upgrade immediately.

But if you do a lot of rotoscoping or color grading, the upgrade is worth it. Magnetic Mask alone will save you hours per project.

Should you upgrade?

User type Recommendation
YouTuber / solo creator Upgrade โ€” Magnetic Mask is huge for product shots
Wedding / event videographer Upgrade โ€” better stabilization saves time
Documentary editor Upgrade โ€” Auto Color is good enough for delivery
Commercial / agency editor Skip โ€” you grade in Resolve anyway
News / broadcast Upgrade โ€” speed improvements matter for tight deadlines

macOS compatibility

FCP 12.3 requires:

If you're on an Intel Mac, you'll need to stay on FCP 11 or move to a new Mac. This is the cutoff Apple announced in 2024.

Captions and subtitle workflow in 12.3

Captions remain in the same place: Modify โ†’ Captions. What's new is the SRT/iTT import dialog now remembers your last import folder. Small quality-of-life win for editors who import captions every project.

If you're working with translated subtitles (e.g. from a localization vendor), 12.3's captions workflow now supports Unicode 15.1 better, which means fewer broken-character issues on CJK content (Chinese, Japanese, Korean).

Bottom line

FCP 12.3 is a meaningful upgrade for most users. The Magnetic Mask feature alone justifies the upgrade if you do any rotoscoping. If you're an Intel Mac holdout, it's time to plan your hardware migration โ€” 11.0 is your final stop.
