16 Free Browser-Based Tools for Video Editors (2026)
Last updated: September 21, 2026 ยท Reading time: ~8 minutes
Why "Browser-Based" Matters
Most "free" tools require signup, watermark your output, upload files to their server (privacy risk), or limit usage. The tools below run entirely in your browser using WebAssembly, JavaScript, or Web APIs. Your files never leave your device.
This matters especially for:
- Professional editors handling unreleased client content
- Journalists working with sensitive source material
- Anyone in a regulated industry (healthcare, finance, legal)
Subtitle & Caption Tools
2. Subtitle Batch Editor
Built into the FCPXML Converter: trim spaces, dedup, fix overlap, split long cues, distribute timing, shift all timecodes by N frames.
3. Subtitle Live Preview
See how your subtitles will look before exporting: choose font, size, color, stroke, position.
Video Tools
4. FFmpeg.wasm (in-browser FFmpeg)
Run the full FFmpeg command line in your browser. Convert between any video format, extract audio, compress, trim. No server, no upload.
5. Video Compressor (HandBrake.wasm)
Compress video files with H.264/H.265 in your browser. Target file size or quality preset.
6. MP4 โ GIF
Convert short video clips to optimized GIFs. Adjust frame rate, palette, dithering.
7. Video Watermark Remover (experimental)
AI-based inpainting to remove watermarks. Best for static logos on simple backgrounds.
Image Tools
8. Image Cutout (Background Removal)
Use the Uยฒ-Net or MODNet model running in your browser via ONNX Runtime. No upload needed.
9. Image Compressor
Convert images to WebP, AVIF, or JPEG with quality control. Batch processing supported.
10. Old Photo Restore
GFPGAN running in browser. Restore faces in old/damaged photos.
11. ID Photo Generator
Crop and resize to standard ID photo dimensions (passport, visa, etc.) with proper background.
PDF Tools
12. PDF โ Word
pdf.js + mammoth.js running in browser. Preserves layout, fonts, and basic formatting.
13. PDF โ Markdown
Extract text and structure from PDFs into clean Markdown. Useful for documentation.
14. PDF โ Image
Convert each PDF page to PNG or JPEG with configurable DPI.
15. PDF OCR (Tesseract.js)
Extract text from scanned PDFs and images. Supports 100+ languages.
16. PDF Merge / Split
pdf-lib based: merge multiple PDFs, split a PDF into separate files, reorder pages.
Why No "AI Everything" Tool?
We deliberately keep the tools focused on deterministic operations (convert, compress, extract). When a tool needs AI (background removal, photo restoration), we use open-source models (Uยฒ-Net, GFPGAN) running in browser via ONNX Runtime, not OpenAI APIs. This means:
- Free forever โ no per-call API costs
- Private โ your images never leave your device
- Works offline โ once loaded, no internet needed
- Predictable โ same input always produces same output
Limitations
Browser-based tools have tradeoffs:
- Memory limits โ browsers cap at ~2-4GB per tab. Very large video files (>2GB) may fail.
- Slower than native โ WebAssembly is 2-5ร slower than native code for some operations.
- No GPU acceleration by default โ though WebGPU is changing this.
For professional work with very large files, native tools (FFmpeg CLI, Adobe Media Encoder, DaVinci Resolve) are still faster. But for 90% of daily tasks, browser tools are good enough.
